Call for Entries Photography exhibition 'Crafting Cultures'

Call for Creative Submissions for new LeidenGlobal photo exhibition:

Crafting Cultures

Photo exhibition
In 2017 LeidenGlobal started a photo exhibition with photographs (first 12, later 18) by scholars from Leiden showing their idea on the impact of migration on heritage. This successful exhibition ‘Heritage on the Move’ moved around Leiden and surroundings for three years and is also presented online. Now it’s time for a new exhibition and new scholars to make impact with their research shown in photographs.

Crafting Cultures
In view of the need to develop a more sustainable world, in which quality of life is a key issue; a re-evaluation of the importance of craft and craftsmanship in different cultures becomes more and more visible. This is not a nostalgic return to an idealised past. It is a search for scenarios that offer a better life for future generations. Crafts can play a central role in different sciences and innovation. Crafts and innovation have gone hand in hand for decades. Across material disciplines, craft processes have always driven breakthroughs that have passed into the other field. Crafts are more often progressive than conservative and therefore a step to innovation.

Call for submissions
LeidenGlobal organises an exhibition of photographs that show how in different cultures people are fusing tradition with innovation through crafts. Demonstrating the relevance of craft production and craftsmanship for future generations worldwide. The photographs are made by Leiden based researchers. Historians, anthropologists, archaeologists, political scientists, and many other researchers have dealt with crafts in their research, sometimes as main topic, sometimes accidental. Researchers are invited to send in a photo that fits in the exhibition's focus on ‘Crafting Cultures’, including a short description about the topic of the photo and the context in which it was taken.

• The photo must have a clear association with the theme ‘Crafting Cultures’
• The image is of high-resolution (300dpi) and good quality
• A clear explanation of maximum 100 words is added
• The photo is free of copyrights
• If the photo is not taken by you, name the photographer and you must have his/her permission The best 12-15 submissions will be used for the exhibition (first online and later in real life).

When the picture of your project is chosen, we will contact you for more information about the project.
► Please send your photo with a short text (max 100 words), including your name, email address, phone number and name of your institute to LeidenGlobal ( before September 1st 2020.
