LeidenGlobal welcomes new chairperson

5 July 2023

As of July 1st, prof. Remco Breuker is the new chairperson for LeidenGlobal. On July 1st he replaced Pieter ter Keurs, professor of Museums, Collections and Society at the faculties of Archaeology and Humanities, who has been chairperson at the LeidenGlobal Board for the last four years.

Remco Breuker is a historian of Korea and Northeast Asia, who works on medieval Korean and Northeast Asian history and on contemporary North Korean affairs. He is a medieval historian by training, but now also focuses on exiles, human rights, forced labour (in the supply chain), human trafficking, and similar issues, mainly but not exclusively in relation to North Korea.

Pieter ter Keurs had been involved with LeidenGlobal since its start, from his position (until 1 Sept 2019) as the Head of the Department of Collections and Research at the National Museum of Antiquities (Rijksmuseum van Oudheden/RMO) and has been chairperson for LeidenGlobal from July 2019 until now, during his position as professor at Leiden University. We thank Pieter for his guidance and advice over the past years and his involvement and help with the LeidenGlobal projects.

Every 3 to 4 years LeidenGlobal has a new chairperson, who is chair of the LeidenGlobal board and who helps LeidenGlobal with the implementation and execution of LeidenGlobals' policy. The chairperson is a representative of one of LeidenGlobals partners: Leiden University, the African Studies Centre, the Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies, the National Museum of Ethnology, the National Museum of Antiquities, the International Institute of Asian Studies, or the Netherlands Institute for the Near East.
