Past, Present & Future in LeidenGlobal Annual Lecture

16 May 2019

On Wednesday May 15th, the Annual LeidenGlobal event of 2019 was held in collaboration with profile area Leiden Global Interactions: The Return of History in the Global Order

Embedding Technopolis
The day started with a Graduate Workshop on Embedding Global Diversity, for which 20 Research Master and PhD students had read Haroon Sheikhs book ‘Embedding Technopolis’. This lead to very vibrant and critical discussions under the moderation of dr. Sheikh himself, as well as prof. Miguel John Versluys (Faculty of Archaeology) and prof. Gert Oostindie (KITLV & LeidenGlobal).

The Return of History?
Later that day, at the Taffeh Hall of the National Museum of Antiquities, dr. Sheikh explained how that “understanding past Globalisation is really important to know what happens now and what we can expect in the future”, using examples from different countries and regions worldwide. “If we want to understand the shape of contemporary Globalisation we need a historically-informed view of the world.” The Return of History, according to dr. Sheikh, ‘is caused by the global geopolitical and economic shift away from the West’.

After a Q & A, moderated by prof. Miguel John Versluys, the evening was concluded with a musical performance by Sophie Anglionin, who chose to use international songs, in the spirit of Leiden goes Global.
