As part of the World Week for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development (19–29 May 2026), LeidenGlobal presents the photo exhibition “Heritage on the Move” one final time. This colourful exhibition brings together the work of academics affiliated with LeidenGlobal, who reflect on the theme “Heritage on the Move” from the perspective of their own research. These diverse viewpoints highlight the topic from multiple angles.
The exhibition focuses on cultural heritage in relation to movement and migration. Central to it is the close interconnection between heritage and migration: how migration shapes cultural heritage, and how heritage, in turn, travels with migrating communities. The exhibition is also available to view online.
In the context of the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, this presentation demonstrates how showcasing cultural heritage within a dynamic, global context can create awareness and serve as an invitation to dialogue.
About the theme
Heritage and migration go hand in hand. As people move across the world, their heritage travels with them. Cultural heritage is often interpreted as something tied solely to local identity. However, for as long as we can remember, heritage has crossed borders through trade, migration, and many other forms of globalisation, including mass media. In this process, both people and their heritage can change.

Since 2017 the exhibition Heritage on the Move has traveled around Leiden and the Hague, along different faculties and institutes connected to Leiden University and the LeidenGlobal partners, and has also passed by places that attract a broader public.

Heritage on the Move bij Herta Mohr
In het kader van de Wereldweek voor Culturele Diversiteit voor Dialoog en Ontwikkeling (19–29 mei) presenteert LeidenGlobal nog eenmaal de fototentoonstelling ‘Heritage on the Move’. Deze kleurrijke tentoonstelling brengt werk samen van aan LeidenGlobal verbonden academici, die vanuit hun eigen onderzoek reflecteren op het thema ‘Heritage on the Move’. Door deze uiteenlopende perspectieven wordt het onderwerp vanuit verschillende invalshoeken belicht.
De tentoonstelling richt zich op culturele erfenis in relatie tot beweging en migratie. Daarbij staat de nauwe verwevenheid tussen erfgoed en migratie centraal: hoe migratie culturele erfenis beïnvloedt, en hoe erfgoed op zijn beurt meebeweegt met migrerende gemeenschappen. De tentoonstelling is ook online te bekijken.
In het kader van de Werelddag voor Culturele Diversiteit voor Dialoog en Ontwikkeling laat deze presentatie zien hoe het tonen van culturele erfenis in een dynamische, mondiale context kan bijdragen aan bewustwording en kan fungeren als uitnodiging tot dialoog.
Over het thema
Erfgoed en migratie gaan hand in hand. Mensen reizen de wereld rond en daarmee ook hun erfgoed. Cultureel erfgoed wordt vaak geïnterpreteerd als alleen een lokale identiteit. Echter, zo ver als ons geheugen reikt, reist erfgoed de wereld over door handel, migratie en vele andere vormen van globalisering, waaronder de massamedia. In deze ontwikkeling kunnen mensen veranderen, maar ook hun erfgoed.
